"It's up to you" and its meanings in Spanish

It's up to you

The English expression "It's up to you" it’s a phrasal verb that can be translated into our Spanish language;  “Es cosa tuya”, “Es cosa suya”, “depende de usted”, “te toca”, “les toca”, and so on… "It's up to you; it's your choice; whatever you say".

What is a phrasal verb?

Before knowing what it is, let us first know what a verb is.

 

Verb, can be defined as a kind of word with which actions, processes, states, or existence that effect people or things are expressed; they can vary according to time, aspect, manner, voice, number, person, and function as the nucleus of the predicate (complement).

"Verbs are words such as talk, sleep, jump, fly, serve, and lift, and so on".

 

A phrasal verb, it’s a verb that changes its meaning when a preposition is added to it. For examples "to look" means, mirar pero si le añadimos un for "to look for" significa buscar, si le añadimos un "like" "to look like" significa” parecerse”, y si le añadimos un "at" "to look at" vuelve a ser “mirar”.

 

Now that we know how to differentiate a verb from a phrasal verb, let's get down to the subject with the interjection "It's up to you", it's up to someone.

Cuando añadimos -UP- al verbo “to be” cambiamos su significado, y no sólo cambia con la preposición “up” sino con la construcción de esta, si ponemos solo la preposición “to be up” = “to get up” que significa “levantarse”

Si tenemos la construcción "to be up to (something)" es intercambiable con doing. "What are you up to? = What are you doing? que significa ¿Qué hace?"

Sin embargo la construction "to be up to (somebody)" it’s up to you,” “it’s up to me” “it’s up to them and so on, su significado cambia radicalmente, por lo tanto: "I'd go, but it's up to you = Yo iría, pero depende de tí" "it's up to you to decide = te toca decidir o depende de tí decidir"

 

Let's take a look at some examples in English and Spanish:

A)   What I can tell you is that the job is yours. So "it's up to you" if you want to work on those terms.

 

B)   I understand it’s a difficult decision to make, but as I just got said, “it's up to you".

 

A)   If you accept working for us, you will have all the possibilities of doing a career here, "it's up to you".

 

-        You were the one who made this mess, now it's up to you to pick it up. (Tú fuiste el que hizo este desorden, ahora te toca recogerlo).

 

-        It's up to you to do your homework, nobody's going to do it for you. (Está en tus manos hacer los deberes, nadie los va a hacer por ti).

 

 

If you want to further punctuate the sentence, you can add the interjection "All" to the sentence. For example, "It all depends on you" and the meaning changes a bit to “Todo depende de usted”.

-        - We can get Mexican or Italian food tonight - it's all up to you.

 

-        - Good morning. It's all up to you today. (Buenos días. Hoy, todo depende de ti - Hoy está todo en tus manos, -hoy el papel lo juega usted).

 

 

"As much up to you as it is up to him" ("depende tanto de tí como de él", or "Es una decision tanto tuya como suya") This is an idiom that can be used in any context, you would only have to change the personal pronoun "you" and the object pronoun "him" depending on who you are referring to.

 

-        Uncle Angel, looks like it's up to you and me. (Tío Ángel, parece que depende de ti y de mí).

 

You can use the phrase “it’s up to you” to give an answer. For example:

If you continue to bother me, I will charge you with Principal Malone, do you want me to do? 

-        It’s up to you!

 

You may be wondering if there is a difference between “It’s up to you" and” It depends on" and the answer is yes, there is.

 

Firstly, "it's up to you" sounds more informal, in contexts where either phrase can be used.

Secondly, "it's up to you" implies that there is a decision to be made.

-        It’s up to you to choose Angel or Albert.

 

-        It depends on" can mean that or it can be a subjunctive form.

 

“It depends on” (it is conditional on something) and its means in Spanish; “depende de” “depender de”

Example with “It depends on”

 

A)   We might go to the beach tomorrow, what do you think about it?

 

B)   It depends on the weather. It depends on if it rains".

 

A)   "Are you coming over this weekend?

 

B)   “It depends on you arriving on time",

 

 

Apart from that, "it depends on" can mean "to count on".

 

"I know I can depend on my cat to love me", or that something/someone will not fail.

 "I know I can depend on the alarm clock to wake me up on time."
